COVID-19 Academic Update

How do I talk with my child about COVID-19?

With the buzzing news surrounding Coronavirus, it's normal to experience anxiety about how to communicate this to children. If you have a child with questions, you can use the following resources to provide factual information and relay concerns.

Talking to Children About COVID-19 (Coronavirus): A Parent Resource

Just for Kids: A Comic Exploring The New Coronavirus

Coronavirus – BrainPOP Learning Experiences

Handwashing: Clean Hands Save Lives

Here are some talking points from Child Mind Institute:

  • Follow students' cues. Let them bring up the subject if they are concerned or ask about general feelings if they are showing anxiety. Do not assume it is due to the Coronavirus.

  • Be developmentally appropriate- don't volunteer too much information but provide factual information to children's questions. It's okay if you can't answer everything.

  • Focus on what we are doing to stay safe- hand washing, fist bumps instead of high fives, hand sanitizer, covering our mouths when coughing or sneezing, etc.

  • Be reassuring with factual information- the virus is rare and has not been affecting children.

  • Encourage students to talk to their families at home if they continue to express concerns.

  • Talk to the child in private if their questions/concerns seem unusually elevated AND/OR refer to their respective school counselor or encourage them to make a referral using their Google Classroom.
