Profile
Bailey Middle School opened in August of 2006 with less than 1,200 students in grades six through eight. Now in its tenth year, Bailey has approximately 1,560 students enrolled in all three grades. During this past decade, Bailey has built a positive reputation in the Lake Norman community as a school with high student achievement and award-winning music, arts, and athletic programs. This year, Bailey has adopted the "Leader in Me program which is based on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People philosophy. Our Broncos receive a well-rounded education with the support of our Bailey families, teachers, staff, and the local community.
The school is located on Bailey Road in Cornelius between Bailey Road Park and Hough High School. The building was designed with a full sized gymnasium, spacious media center, cafetorium and separate wings for each grade level and elective classes. In addition to the gym, the school has spacious drama, dance, technology and music classrooms. In 2013, an eight classroom modular unit was added to the campus to accommodate our growing student population. The school grounds also include a football field and track. Through a joint ownership agreement between CMS and the town of Cornelius, our athletic teams have use of the baseball, softball, and soccer fields located in Bailey Road Park.
The school is also equipped with wi-fi throughout the building. In January 2015, Bailey became a one-to-one school with Chromebooks for every student. Our teachers use a variety of online platforms which enhances their instruction by giving them the ability to individualize instruction for students on a daily basis. Through the use of the Chromebooks, students are more engaged in lessons and have the opportunity to take ownership of their learning.
Bailey Middle School enjoys widespread support from parents and the community. The Bailey PTSA is strong and contributes time, talent, and treasure to support numerous programs and events provided to our students, staff, and families. The school currently has partnerships with a number of area churches, organizations, and businesses.
Bailey Middle School is fortunate to have a variety of extra-curricular activities including twelve athletic teams. During our ten years, our athletic teams have won numerous conference championships. During the 2014-2015 school year, all of our athletic teams won conference championships. Our Golf team remains undefeated after ten seasons in the league. In addition to our school teams, we also have several athletic clubs such as Rugby, Cross Country for Youth, Lacrosse, and Girls on the Run.
Bailey offers a variety of arts programs both before and during the school day. Students interested in drama, dance, or singing can participate in our annual fall musical production. Our music department offers a variety of programs such as performing band, jazz band, blazin' bows, and the Bailey Singers. Our performing band and orchestra have received Superior ratings consistently in the South Central District competition. Our art department features a mural club that has created, and continues to create, colorful murals throughout the building. The mural in our main hall highlights the Leader in Me program.
Bailey also has a variety of academic clubs including a chapter of the National Junior Honor Society, Horsepower Motorsports, Math Club, Robotics, Code Academy, Stock Market Club, Future Business Leaders of Tomorrow, and Chess Club. Students in these clubs have participated in several local, state, and national competitions. The Horsepower Motorsports Team qualifies and competes annually in the National STEM league National finals. Our Code Academy students exceeded state and national averages on the Bebras Computing Challenge and consistently places in the North Carolina Stock Market Games. Our Bailey Gives Back club sponsors a variety of community service projects throughout the year which helps support our local community with monetary, food, and clothing donations.
The goal of the staff at Bailey Middle is Inspire Learners and Empower Leaders. One of the many ways that our staff meets this goal is through our Leadership Ambassadors. These students lead by example through conducting weekly Leader in Me lessons, greeting visitors at the main entrance to the school, coordinating school service projects, and conducting school tours for future Bronco families. It has truly been a Decade of Excellence at Bailey Middle School and we look forward to many more years of excellence in the future.
