Welcome

Dear Barnette Community,

Since we opened the doors of Barnette Elementary in 2008-2009, our school staff has maintained a strong focus on student success and educating the whole child.  Through a focus on strong academics, real-life learning experiences, character development, multiple extracurricular opportunities, and social and emotional development we are preparing our students for the future.

Barnette Elementary School is located in Huntersville, North Carolina as part of the Northwest Learning Community in Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District.  We presently serve 706 students in pre-K through fifth grade and have 81 staff members.

We are a Cambridge Primary School and follow and use the Cambridge philosophies, which include providing students with opportunities that challenge them academically and opportunities that help to develop leadership skills. We offer a variety of academic and extracurricular opportunities for all students.

Our community and families are active participants and an integral part of the Barnette community.  I invite you to participate in our school community as often as you can. Please remember to register as a CMS volunteer. All volunteers must register each year and select Barnette as the site. Please also remember to bring your ID to sign in upon entering the school as we are working diligently to keep our school safe.

My passion for education and supporting the success of all learners began in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District over 21 years ago. I grew up in southern New Hampshire where I lived until college graduation.  I earned a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in science from Plymouth State College.  I earned my master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Winthrop University through a partnership with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in the Leaders for Tomorrow Program. My entire educational career has been in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School district where I have worked in both Title 1 and non-Title 1 schools as an elementary school teacher, literacy facilitator, and assistant principal at both the elementary and middle school level.

As a principal, I am committed to providing the best education possible to each of our students and I believe that every child can succeed in school. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns. I can be reached at melissa.roy@cms.k12.nc.us or 980-343-0372.  I look forward to working with you to ensure that Barnette Elementary School continues to offer a challenging, effective educational experience in a safe, happy atmosphere.

Thank you for choosing Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and Barnette Elementary School.

Working Together,

Melissa Roy
