Dear Croft Community School families,

Welcome to Croft Community School! Since our doors first opened in the 2008-2009 school year, our staff members have maintained a strong focus on student success. We are a unique and diverse community with many ties to the history of Charlotte and the community of Croft, which is represented in our mural in the main foyer of the building. In the early 1900s the community of Croft, North Carolina, was a thriving agricultural area, as well as an important early railroad stop north of Charlotte. Croft still appears on most maps of the area. The Croft schoolhouse, now a registered historic landmark, was originally built as a two-room, two-story school in 1890.  By the early 1900s, Croft was a flourishing community and the two-room school was soon overcrowded with close to 40 students from 5 to 17 years old. Silas Davis, a prominent farmer and co-owner of the S.W. and C.S. Davis General Store, lobbied for an expansion of the school for several years but the county school board refused. In 1910, he had a two-room addition built at his own expense and billed the local school board.  A report shows he was promptly reimbursed. With the addition of two rooms, the school became the largest existing pre-1920 schoolhouse in Mecklenburg County. The four-room Croft schoolhouse sufficed until the late 1930s, when it was replaced by a newer and larger school located just across the road on Highway 115. The new school served elementary and middle grades while high school students attended school in Huntersville at the site that is now Huntersville Elementary. The Croft School served as more than an educational site for the community. It was also the community gathering place. The Croft School built in the 1930s still provides a meeting place for the Veterans of Foreign Wars and other local groups. The original Croft Schoolhouse has been restored, complete with school bell, and provides office space for several businesses. The Croft Schoolhouse and General Store are a significant historical link to early public education and commerce in northern Mecklenburg Count. These preserved landmarks, in a rapidly growing area, connect 21st-century Charlotte to the rich history of Croft and North Mecklenburg County.ln 2008, Croft Community School was founded on a basic school philosophy.  A decade later, we do not hold rigidly to the basic philosophy tenets but we do retain some of the basic philosophy’s values and beliefs about educating our students, including incorporating the arts and bringing in 21st-century skills to the classroom. At Croft Community School, we believe that we build a community of learners with parents as partners and teachers as leaders who collaborate to develop students into productive citizens.

At our school, we are building each year on a tradition of excellence and academic success, setting higher goals for ourselves and our students. We offer opportunities for engagement in extracurricular activities through staff sponsorship and outside vendors representing a range of interests, including Bricks 4 Kidz, Sarah's Spanish School, guitar and piano lessons, chess, Girls on the Run and robotics. Students also have leadership opportunities during the school day through Croft Ambassadors, safety patrol, morning news crew, and yearbook committee. Our PTA has had a focus on and commitment to community service and students at every grade level participate. They have also begun and maintained a recycling program in the cafeteria to reduce waste in conjunction with our custodial staff. I invite you to participate in our school community as often as you can. Please remember to register as a CMS volunteer. All volunteers must register each year and select Croft as the site. Please also remember to bring your ID to sign in upon entering the school as we are working diligently to keep our school safe.

Finally, I would like to tell you a little bit about me. I grew up in southeastern Michigan and western New York. I am a mother of two boys who are also CMS elementary students. I earned a bachelor of arts in elementary education with a concentration in science from Canisius College of Buffalo, New York. I earned my master’s degree in educational leadership from Winthrop University through a partnership with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in the Leaders for Tomorrow Program.I taught at the elementary level in Iredell Statesville Schools for three years prior to joining Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. During my time in CMS, I have been a reading tutor, literacy facilitator, dean of students, and assistant principal.  I have worked at Long Creek, Barnette and Torrence Creek elementary schools and at Ashley Park Elementary/Ashley Park Pre-K-8 School. As a principal, I am committed to providing the best education possible to each of our students and I believe that every child can succeed in school.
