Dorothy J. Vaughan Academy of Technology is a full CMS K-5 magnet school. Our magnet theme is Computer Science Immersion. The school building was the original site of Newell Elementary School, which closed in 2015 due to increased student enrollment and moved to a new location on Rocky River Road. The renovated building reopened in August 2017 as Dorothy J. Vaughan Academy of Technology. Enrollment is based on a lottery process, with a total of 450 students attending in grades K-5th. DJV is a member of the Magnet Schools of America Association.

MAGNET SCHOOLS OF AMERICA
A magnet school is a free public elementary or secondary school of choice that has a focused theme and curriculum in a variety of areas. These areas include STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), Fine and Performing Arts, International Baccalaureate (IB), International Studies (IS), MicroSociety, Career and Technical Education (CTE), World Languages (immersion and non-immersion), along with many others. Magnet schools are operated by a school district, or a consortium of districts, that are built on the foundation of five pillars. Magnet schools are typically more “hands on – minds on” and use an approach to learning that is inquiry or performance/project based. More information about Magnet Schools of America can be found at the Magnet Schools of America Website. (opens in a new tab)
