About Our School

front entrance of Matthews Elementary SchoolMatthews Elementary School, located in historic downtown Matthews, has a long-standing tradition of excellence for over one hundred years!  Matthews Elementary embodies collaboration which can be seen on a daily basis as school staff, community members, parents, families, students, and all stakeholders work together to accomplish one goal -- Helping each student reach their fullest potential.

Matthews Elementary is a school that is dedicated to providing ongoing opportunities for our community and staff to work together.  Our MPTO (Matthews Parent Teacher Organization) hosts several outings throughout the year to foster a sense of community.  Such events are Family Movie Nights at Stumptown Park and Stinger Fest annual carnival.  Our fifth grade students take an annual overnight trip with parents and staff to Williamsburg, Virginia, where all involved learn the importance of our country's heritage.  As you can see, our community and staff work to ensure that all students receive a well-rounded education.

Our school has created a commitment to helping students meet high standards and expectations for academic performance and character.  At Matthews, you will find extraordinary teachers who commit themselves to educating students to exhibit not only intellect but character as well.  Our teachers understand the power of praise which empowers students to treat each other with dignity while teaching them the importance of citizenship.  In carrying out our educational program, we make a concentrated effort to design instruction that is based on the individual need of each learner.  This practice is the foundation of our rigorous academic program which enables our students to meet high expectations and learn on new levels in order to meet the demands of tomorrow.

In addition to our commitment to an excellent educational and character education program, we offer some opportunities for our students to join extracurricular activities during the after school hours.  Tennis Club, Art Club, Girls on the Run, Let Me Run, campus clean-up, Flag Football and Math Olympiad are just a few of the many opportunities that are offered to our students on a regular basis.

The legacy of Matthews Elementary is reflected in its students, both past and present, and the tradition of excellence in education moves forward with each generation.  With rich history and a bright future, we embrace a place of learning where students and parents have a sense of pride.
