NC State Definition of AIG Students (Article 9B)
Academically or intellectually gifted (AIG) students perform or show the potential to perform at substantially high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experiences, or environment. Academically or intellectually gifted students exhibit high performance capability in intellectual areas, specific academic fields, or in both the intellectual areas and specific academic fields. Academically or intellectually gifted students require differentiated educational services beyond those ordinarily provided by the regular educational program. Outstanding abilities are present in students from all cultural groups, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor.
Academically & Intellectually Gifted Students at Rama Road Elementary
At Rama Road, we are proud to differentiate and personalize learning paths to meet the needs of our most advanced learners. We have a full time Talent Development teacher three days per week at Rama. All CMS elementary schools are required to teach reading using the EL Curriculum in K-5 and Envision for math content. In addition to this foundational instruction, Gifted students benefit from spending differentiated instructional time with their intellectual peers. As part of the Talent Development Catalyst Model, it is recommended by the CMS Talent Development department that schools, including Rama, use cluster grouping and flexible grouping to meet students' advanced learning needs. Students are scheduled with TD class time to support their identified Gifted area across the three days each week.
Our Talent Development teacher works closely with our Academic Facilitators to closely align instruction using the William and Mary model, Jacob's Ladder, Paideia Practices, Socratic Seminar, Primary Education Thinking Skills, Project M2 Math and Math Superstars to support instruction and critical thinking when students are in TD class. Also assigned are independent novel studies and project based learning units. Students use independent work time in class with their homeroom teachers to complete this work on their own. For the 2020-21 school year, the digital platform, Edgenuity will be used to support rigorous and self-paced pathways for students, customized to their MAPs scores three times per year and giving students choice in their enrichment learning opportunities.
During remote teaching and learning during Spring 2020, our Talent Development teacher offered a Dojo video to each grade with a challenge and/or breakout challenge with writing for Talent Development students to complete within a week of the assignment. Students were encouraged to work independently, communicating with the Talent Development teacher when they had questions or needed support.
At Rama Road, we are fortunate to have a Science Lab and Creative Commons classes to further extend student learning opportunities based on project based learning through the Special Area class rotation. STEM Club, Science Ambassadors for Grades 3-5 and Science Olympiad are offered for students who show a proclivity for STEM subjects to have extracurricular opportunities for enrichment.
