Welcome from Principal Reeves

Dear Ridge Road Families,

Welcome to our school!  Ridge Road opened in 2009 as a neighborhood school serving the northeast Charlotte community. Located in the Highland Creek community, Ridge Road stands tall, beautiful, and proud on the hill as a beacon of pride and excellence. The school has always remained true to its core values of embracing every child with a warm sense of family and ensuring an unwavering commitment to finding each student’s talents through a unique educational approach.

We are proud to offer a wide range of rigorous academic programs at our school, including Project Lead the Way courses in our Career and Technical Education department. We offer standard and honors core classes, as well as both NC Math I and NC Math II, which are high school-level courses.  We are quite proud of our award-winning arts programs, including visual arts, dance, band, orchestra, and world drumming.

We have a highly effective faculty well-versed in integrating diverse cultures into core curricula, as well as in differentiating learning opportunities to meet the needs of each child in a classroom. We utilize the EL literacy curriculum in grades 6-8 and the Open Up math curriculum in grades 6-8, as well. We also place a high priority on social-emotional learning and our Raven Way program, and we offer a comprehensive SEL curriculum called Caring Schools. We have several full- and part-time support staff members, including three school counselors, a social worker, four social-emotional learning and behavior interventionists, mental health therapists, and a school psychologist. We are proud to offer services to Exceptional Children, including three EC-Extensions classrooms. At Ridge Road, we take pride in supporting our English Learner students, as well.

We also support learning and growth opportunities beyond the classroom. Our students can participate in such clubs as Mock Trial, Battle of the Books, Broadcast Team, Dance Team, and National Junior Honors Society among many others. We also offer a comprehensive athletic program with award-winning competitive teams in a variety of sports.

Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I joined the Ridge Road Middle School community as the Principal in August 2020. Prior to that, I was the Principal at Greenway Park Elementary in CMS for multiple years.

I grew up in a small town in the mountains of North Carolina. I attended Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC where I earned a bachelor's degree in politics and broadcast journalism. I worked at a couple of television stations before realizing my passion lies in equalizing educational opportunities for students. Ten years ago, I moved to Charlotte and joined CMS. I have taught high school math, worked in central administration and served as a dean of instruction and assistant principal in two CMS schools, as well. My experience has taught me that the best way to increase and sustain high student achievement is to nurture a strong school culture and sense of community where the principal, staff, and families work collectively to best meet the needs of individual students.

On a personal note, I am married and a parent. My wife, Sarah Reeves, is the Chief Academic Officer for Cabarrus County Schools. We have one daughter, Hadley Calais, and a Pomeranian pup named Cooper. In my free time, I enjoy playing the piano, spending time with friends on the lake, and cooking.

Again, welcome to Ridge Road Middle. I look forward to working with you and your student this year!  Follow us on social media for the most updated information: On Facebook as Principal Courtlyn Reeves, on Instagram @RidgeRoadPrincipal, and on Twitter @PrincipalRRMS. I invite and encourage you to visit our school to see the amazing work done by students and staff alike. I would love to personally show you around our state-of-the-art campus and to talk with you at-length about how your student will benefit from receiving their middle grades education at Ridge Road Middle.  These are critical years in a student’s academic and social-emotional trajectory, and we as the staff stand ready to support your student and help him/her reach remarkable goals.

Sincerely,

Courtlyn C. Reeves, Principal
