Attendance and Absences

Attendance

Each child must bring a written excuse from the parent or guardian stating the reason for absence upon his or her return to school. The absence will be marked as unexcused until a note is received. Missing the school bus and/or oversleeping cannot be coded as an excused absence. Each student who accumulates more than 3 unexcused absences will be mailed a notice from the principal as required by state law outlining the negative impact of student absences in school.

If you have questions about an absence, please email our Attendance Secretary, Valerie Vanderhall. (opens in new window)

Excused Absences:

The following reasons are considered excuses for absences:

  • Personal illness
  • Medical appointments
  • Death in family
  • Religious holidays
  • Approved Educational Leave (form must be submitted 5 days in advance)
Please note that all absences are considered unexcused unless the parent provides a written explanation for the absence. The school may request formal documentation from medical professionals should absences become excessive.

Unexcused Absences:

  • No written excuse or email
  • Missing the bus
  • Car trouble
  • Oversleeping
  • Inclement weather

Also, please note that students must be present for 210 minutes in order for the student to be counted as present for the school day. In addition, early dismissal ends promptly at 2:00pm to ensure a safe dismissal process for all students.

Tardiness

Students who arrive to school after 8:00 AM must be signed in by a parent in the office. Once signed in, the student will receive a tardy pass and must report to his or her classroom. Tardy passes are issued to ensure that each child is registered present for the day. Students must be in their classroom by 8:00 AM or they will be counted tardy. Children signing in tardy after 11:15 AM will be counted absent for the day.

Educational Leave

The request for educational leave must be made in writing and submitted to the principal for approval. Please make sure you submit the request and secure approval five days prior to going on a trip.

Religious Obligation: Request for Excused Absence

The Religious Obligation: Request for Excused Absence form must be completed for consideration of an excused absence from school under Board Policy ACD.

• All requests should be submitted to the school at least two weeks in advance of the
requested absence.
• Students are responsible for making up all missed class work and homework

Please explain the educational opportunity the student will be attending and how the activity meets the criteria of 1) having an educational purpose, 2) having significant educational value, and 3) how the activity is related to the North Carolina State Standards using the form linked above.

Please note the following:

  • A student may receive up to 3 Educational Opportunity days per school year.

  • It is the parent / student’s responsibility to request any work PRIOR to the absences.
