As the newly appointed principal of Tuckaseegee Elementary School, I want to express what an honor and privilege it is to have the opportunity to serve such a remarkable school community. I want to continue to work collaboratively with you, your students, community members and our staff to foster a strong sense of Panther Pride in order to increase scholars’ academic achievement and social-emotional growth. By working together, I know we can demonstrate that Tuckaseegee Elementary is a school in which every child is provided access to an equitable education and is challenged with a rigorous educational program and has the opportunity to maximize their greatness.
Most of my career includes service to students across Mecklenburg County. I served as an instructional assistant, elementary and middle school teacher in CMS, as well as a Dean of Students and Assistant Principal at a CMS middle and high school. From my varied experiences throughout my career, I learned that the best method to increase and sustain high student achievement is to foster the development of a strong school culture and sense of community in which the principal, staff, community members and families work collectively to best meet the needs of individual scholars.
Therefore, I invite you to be involved in our school – your school – and to actively participate in your child’s education. Your participation and support may come in a variety of ways including joining the PTA, working as a volunteer at the school, tracking your student’s academic progress, attending school-wide events, promoting our great work in the community, and communicating questions and concerns to our teachers and to me.
I am humbled and thrilled to lead the Tuckaseegee team to sustain the incredible work accomplished in recent years and embrace the opportunity to further develop our strong Learning Immersion/Talent Development magnet program at our school. In the next few weeks, I will meet with our School Improvement Team and PTO, as well as staff members and community partners, in order to talk more about next steps for our outstanding school. I will also host an in person and remote meeting where parents have the opportunity to learn more about me.
Please feel free to contact me with your questions, concerns, or suggestions by calling the school at 980-343-6055 or by emailing gregoryg.hicks@cms.k12.nc.us.
Respectfully,
Travaris Hicks
Principal
