At Walter G. Byers School of Epidemiology, Ecology, and Engineering, we believe that all things
are possible. Our scholars are challenged to think to learn and learn to think. Within our school
culture, we strive to create a safe, inviting environment where scholars are encouraged to
embrace an innovative mindset and become well-rounded citizens. We also recognize and
embrace our collective responsibility to prepare every scholar for success beyond the middle
school years. This instructional focus is a statement of our recommitment to that goal and the
steps we will take to achieve this vision.
Success for our scholars rests on consistent attention to the “Four Pillars” of our educational
programs.
1. We will provide standards-aligned, culturally responsive instruction in every classroom every
day, and we will teach in ways that meet each scholar’s learning style and needs.
2. We will nurture a safe climate for learning and work, and will build strong relationships with
families and community, because our school cannot do it alone.
3. We will provide instructional strategies that are differentiated to meet the varied learning
needs of each scholar.
4. We will set high expectations and college readiness for all – scholars, educators, parents,
community – and will work together to support our scholars in meeting high behavioral and
academic standards.
This is our roadmap for guiding our scholars towards living with purpose and learning with
passion, so that they become brave, brilliant, and resilient citizens.
