Welcome to the Big I!
Independence High School is a comprehensive neighborhood high school representing the diverse community of East Charlotte and the suburban town of Mint Hill. At Independence, students, parents and staff partner together to ensure success and high growth for all students. Our focus is on high academic achievement, effective educators, adequate resources and facilities, safe and orderly schools, freedom and flexibility, and strong parent and community connections.
We support a positive and equitable learning environment that values academics, athletics and the arts through a wide variety of curricular and extracurricular activities. Our Career and Technical Education program includes multiple pathways of study including software development, marketing, environmental sustainability, culinary & hospitality, computer engineering, carpentry, business management, biomedical & health sciences, automotive, architecture & engineering, and advanced manufacturing & engineering. Furthermore, students have the opportunity to apply to be in one of our cohort-based academies: the Global Studies Program, which focuses on current issues and cultures across the world, and the Academy of Engineering (AOE) which focuses on careers in engineering. All students have the opportunity to take college level courses through our partnership with Central Piedmont Community College, as well as Honors and Advanced Placement coursework. We offer students the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of athletic teams, clubs and organizations, including our award-winning Patriot Playmakers theater program and our state championship winning basketball and football teams.
We welcome you to the Independence family, and thank you for choosing Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and Independence High School.
